We used to travel in it quite often, and the journey itself felt very musical. The rhythmic “tak-tak” sound of the horse’s hooves echoed on the road, while the bells tied around its neck created a soothing melody. At the same time, the coachman (driver) would make different sounds with his mouth to guide the horse—whether to move forward or take left and right turns. Occasionally, he would even give it a light tap.
The entire tonga would sway as it moved along. In those days, most vehicles had wooden wheels, covered with a thin layer of rubber on top to prevent them from wearing out quickly.
Recently, I got the chance to ride a tonga again in Haridwar. I paid around 200 rupees and requested them for a short round. During the ride, I had a good conversation with the coachman, which is also included in the video. This experience brought back many childhood memories.
There are also some challenges here. I spoke to members of the local association and union, and they mentioned that the police authorities, the mayor, and the local BJP MLA are working to improve the system. Their effort is to allow tongas at least up to the Mansa Devi gate, as beyond that point, the crowd becomes too heavy.
This journey took me back to those childhood days when we used to visit our village during vacations. I remember once, after attending a wedding, a tonga was specially arranged for our return. Our luggage was loaded onto it, and we traveled back the same way. Even back then, this ride wasn’t cheap—transport in villages has always been more expensive compared to cities.
