Recently, I got the opportunity to visit a village in Chhattisgarh called Manpur, located near Pendra Road, about sixteen kilometers from Pendra Road Railway Station. It is a tribal village where people from the Gond community mainly live. Today, one could describe this village as middle class in many ways. There are good houses — some are concrete homes, while others are traditional tiled-roof houses — and I saw only one hut in the entire village.
I had gone there to cover a wedding, but when I got the chance to explore and understand the village more closely, I felt it should be documented through video so that its beauty and way of life could be preserved.
The first place I visited was an old house, almost fifty years old. Looking at it reminded me of my own old village home. The roof was made of traditional clay tiles, and the lower portion of the house was plastered with cow dung. Except for the ceiling, almost every corner and surface had been carefully coated with it. Even the walls were plastered up to nearly three feet from the ground. I have rarely seen a village this clean. Every house was neatly maintained and beautifully plastered, and the outer walls were decorated with attractive paintings and colors.
Inside these tiled-roof houses, thick wooden beams made from sal wood are used. Sal wood is considered extremely strong and is believed to last for nearly three hundred years.
We also visited the courtyard of the house, where “Bada Dev,” the deity worshipped by the tribal community, had been established. In the center of the house, a sacred space was created where symbols connected to Bada Dev and the ancestors were placed and worshipped.
Since we had arrived early in the morning, we needed to complete our daily routines. We walked towards the river, about one and a half kilometers away from the house, and went into the nearby forest area for our morning activities. It was not that the house lacked a bathroom — the house where the wedding was taking place did have one — but since many relatives and women guests were staying there, we thought it would be better to leave the bathroom for them and head outside instead.
After returning, it was time to bathe. We were given a choice between the hand pump, the river, or the well. Since the river’s water flow was very low, we finally chose the well. After almost thirty-five years, perhaps even longer, I was bathing at a village well again. It felt wonderful and brought back many memories.
This village has electricity, proper roads, and is now polio-free. Earlier, malaria used to be very common here, but today the village has become malaria-free as well.
After seeing all this, I felt that today’s villages are no longer like the villages of the past. In many ways, they now resemble small towns. Yet the air there is fresh, the food is fresh, and most essential facilities are available. If someone wishes, it is entirely possible to live a peaceful and comfortable life in a village.
I know many people who are leaving cities behind and returning to village life. Perhaps someday, I too would like to become one of them.
So, this was a small glimpse of that beautiful village, which I have tried to capture through this video.
