Friends, I had been waiting for this wedding for a very long time. To cover this wedding, I traveled to Pendra district in Chhattisgarh. It was the wedding of my cousin’s friend, Ramu Singh Dhruva. We left from Delhi to cover the ceremony. We boarded a train in the afternoon and reached there the next morning around 4:30 AM. After waiting at the station for quite some time, a car arrived and took us to the village.

Early in the morning, we reached a small village called Manpur. The village was very small, with hardly twenty to thirty houses. As soon as we arrived, the groom welcomed us. Turmeric paste had already been applied to his body, and he was not allowed to step outside the house. This was a Gond tribal wedding. The family belonged to a middle-class background and was quite educated. One or two family members were working in government jobs, and the groom himself had completed a doctorate and was working as a teacher in Rajasthan.

The house was beautifully decorated and painted. After arriving in the morning, we were served breakfast that included namkeen, balushahi, and gulab jamun. After that, we got to witness the wedding rituals. I was truly amazed to see how closely nature was connected with the ceremony. A large mandap had been built using tree branches and wooden logs to create a natural roof-like structure. It felt as if the entire wedding was taking place in the lap of nature. Water, fire, air, earth, and sky — all these elements were considered sacred and were included to create a spiritual atmosphere.

The haldi ceremony had already taken place earlier, but that day was the ritual of removing the haldi. Some people were making photos and reels with the bride and groom. Modern influences can now be seen in weddings, but most of the rituals are still performed in the traditional way.

After the haldi was removed, an interesting ritual took place in which people lifted the groom on their shoulders and danced. This celebration continued for almost three hours. Then around 3:30 in the evening, the groom’s bathing ritual took place. This ritual was performed outside the main entrance of the house, almost on the roadside itself. Everyone together removed the remaining haldi and bathed the groom.

After that, preparations for the baraat began. The groom had specially brought a cream-colored Rajasthani suit from Rajasthan. He also carried a small sword, and his entire look resembled a traditional Jodhpuri style. A traditional headgear was placed on his head. After getting ready, he had a photoshoot with his friends, and then the baraat of around eleven vehicles set off.
