The wedding procession had to travel nearly sixty kilometers to Madhya Pradesh. The groom’s car was leading the procession, followed by the other vehicles. On the way, they stopped at one place to decorate the groom’s car, which took nearly an hour. The procession left around 6:30 PM and finally reached the bride’s house at about 9 PM.
Outside the bride’s village, the entire baraat gathered on the main road, and from there everyone danced with drums and traditional music while moving toward the bride’s house. A little before reaching the house, the baraat was stopped for a special ritual. Snacks and sweets were served there so that the guests could relax after the long journey.
Another beautiful ritual was seen where the bride’s family washed the feet of some special relatives from the groom’s side. This was a symbol of respect and hospitality for the guests who had traveled from far away.
After this, prayers and rituals were performed outside the house according to traditional Gond customs. The community priest, who is given great respect there, was seen conducting the rituals with full traditional procedures.
Meanwhile, we went toward the dining area, and honestly, looking at the food, it did not feel at all like a tribal community wedding. The arrangements were just like those at a grand city wedding. A huge dining tent had been set up, and there was a wide variety of food. There were no sweets, only ice cream. On one side, a DJ was playing where people were dancing in groups. It was truly a memorable experience for me.
A large stage had also been set up for the varmala ceremony. This was a modern change, because such things were not traditionally part of these weddings earlier. Over time, people have adopted some changes after observing other communities. Perhaps the bride and groom were also going to do some posed photoshoots, similar to pre-wedding shoots.
Although we did not stay there for very long, this wedding became an unforgettable experience for me. The warmth of the people, the traditions connected with nature, and the blend of modernity with tradition made everything very special. In this video, you will get to see all these experiences.
