Cyclone Jasper battering Cairns region - December 13, 2023
Strong winds and heavy rain from Cyclone Jasper are pummeling Cairns and the surrounding area, especially northwards towards Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation. The storm's strongest winds are near 60 miles per hour (95kph), with higher gusts, and heavy rainfall from the slowly moving storm are likely to accumulate up to 500mm in some places. Jasper will, at some point, speed up into the landfall phase, and will rapidly weaken and dissipate inland tomorrow.
Elsewhere, several other areas of interest are making themselves known. A potential cyclone could form in the Western Pacific and head towards Palau and the Philippines, with models starting to get on board. Wind and rain impacts are possible across the Visayas early next week.
In the Southwest Indian Ocean, an area of interest continues to be monitored northeast of Madagascar, and could eventually wind down towards Mauritius next week and intensity.
Off northern Australia, two cyclones could form next week with one becoming particularly strong in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
In the South Pacific, a quick spin-up compact cyclone could form near Samoa this weekend or early next week, and produce strong winds.
