The Track of Typhoon Tip (1979)
Typhoon Tip was the most intense storm in world history, with a recorded pressure of 870mb from a reconnaissance plane. With gaps in plane coverage, the actual intensity of this storm may have been even lower, as it peaked in October 1979 in the open Western Pacific ocean.
The storm later struck Japan as a much weakened but still very large typhoon, killing 111. Typhoon Tip is also known for being one of the largest tropical cyclones recorded. Depending on how the measurement is made, Tip is between the 1st and 5th largest storm on record.
