With the rebellion declared Robert and his allies set out to overthrow the Mad King, defeat the Crown Prince Rhaegar and take back Lyanna Stark. The first conflict began very close to home over in Gulltown. Most of the banner-man rallied to Jon Arryn's side when the war was declared but some remained loyal to Targaryen rule.
Marq Grafton, of House Grafton, lead the resistance by bringing together other houses who also defied Lord Arryn's call to arms. They set up defence in Gulltown intending to halt the rebels from entering its port. Here is where Robert met his first test, he and his men brought down the defences and Robert killed Marq Grafton. Afterwards Lord Baratheon travelled back to Storm's End to raise his banners.
Robert found the same resistance in his banner-man as Jon Arryn did and fighting begun in the Stormlands, the first of which at Summerhall. Within one day three battles took place. Robert gained intelligence that three of his liege lords planned to march on Storm's End, as each arrived nearby Robert attacked them defeating their forces individually instead of as a whole. One of the Lord's died and left his son in charge whilst the remaining two Lords were captured. Robert persuaded what was left of these three houses to join his rebellion.
Robert then marched East and was met by Randall Tarly in Ashford, soon followed by Tyrell forces. The Tarly's defeated most of the Baratheon men and Randall Tarly himself defeated Lord Cafferen, who had sided with the rebellion during the battles of Summerhall, and sent his head to King Aerys. Robert managed to escape and return to Storm's End but Mace Tyrell rellish's this victory over the usurper, even though he had little involvement. Mace then began a siege Storm's end that would last a year.
