Long Duration M4.2 Solar Flare + CME (5/9/2023)
A long duration M4.2 solar flare around AR 3296 peaked at 18:58 UTC (May 9, 2023). This was followed up a few hours later by an M5.0 flare at 20:52 UTC. The first event was associated with a type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 1892 km/s. An energetic, full halo coronal mass ejection (CME) became visible soon after and there does appear to be a distinct Earth directed component. An impact to our geomagnetic field may be possible by May 11th. More to follow via SolarHam.com
