I have so much enjoyed learning the pieces from Ross Lee Finney's collection 'Youth's Companion' (Peters, 1981). This is the fourth of the set, and like the others it uses a tone row of six notes (in this case the whole tone scale). The pieces are all very different in character and sound. This one is perhaps distantly reminscent of Debussy's impressionist work, though unlike the earlier composer, Finney does not repeat individual phrases but rather aims at a kind of continuous development.

This is effectively a scherzo in ABA form, with the middle section using the whole tone scale and the pedal to create an eerie atmosphere.
