Browsers Show non-HTTPS Sites As Insecure
Starting sometime in July 2018, Google Chrome will start showing a warning for sites without HTTPS. This means that your website needs to have a SSL certificate and be HTTPS , not HTTP, to have customers avoid seeing this warning.
Google first stated in 2015 that they would give a slight SEO advantage to HTTPS sites over HTTP sites, if all other factors were equal. This was perhaps the first nudge in getting the web to move towards HTTPS.
HTTPS allows for encryption of information that is sent through a contact form or through e-commerce. If the information is sent via email, that part of the information chain should also be encrypted. However, this helps make information more secure and private.
SSL certificates usually cost somewhere between $50-300 yearly, depending on the level of encryption you desire. In recent years, a service called Let's Encrypt has been set up to offer basic SSL certificate for free. These certificates must be renewed every 90 days, but Let's Encrypt has allowed more websites to move to HTTPS and get a SSL certificate without having economics be a barrier.
Most managed WordPress hosts, such as Kinsta, WP Engine, Flyweel, and Siteground (among others) have partnered with Let's Encrypt, and offer free SSLs that renew automatically once you sign up for SSL on your website.
The Chrome browser adding a "this site is insecure" warning is a new step for browsers. Most browsers already show an insecure warning if a HTTPS site has a misconfigured SSL certificate, or if the certificate is expired. Up until now, browsers have not shown this warning for regular HTTP sites.
Other browsers may chose to follow this practice in the future, as the web continues to evolve, and web standards push the internet to improve the conditions of websites for everyone.
