Custom Machine Build
Here's a run-through of some of the mechanisms I've been working on for a custom machine build. 4 retractable guide pins are actuated with a cam follower and springs as the linear stage moves into position. I originally thought I would be able to test this with some 3D printed parts, but it turned out to be a lot more complicated than I expected. I ended up machining the critical components from aluminum and changing the design several times along the way.
My original plan was to use guide bushings on the pins, but I wasn't able to get that to work without binding up like crazy. Instead, I added the mini linear guide rail, which is the shortest stroke application for one that I've ever seen! This works quite well, delivering smooth, precise motion every time.
Iteration is an important part of the engineering design process. Very few things are perfect, or even good enough, on the first try.
