An area of interest is on the verge of becoming a fully fledged tropical cyclone off the coast of Western Australia, and is expected to rapidly intensify before it reaches the Pilbara coast later this week. The storm has a tight core, and will be moving slowly and erraticly, giving forecasters a headache in terms of being able to nail down a clear track and intensity for the storm. Confidence is increasing, however, for the storm to be nearer the stronger end, and pivot slightly further west before making landfall. All points from Karratha to the eastern end of Eighty Mile Beach are implicated in the potential track of the storm, with winds of over 200kph possible.

The main threat is still torrential rainfall with high rain rates leading to flash flooding over the next few days. Some areas along the coast could reach 500mm of rainfall, with interior desert areas receiving up to 250mm in widespread areas.

The latest track is also depicting a more southward element after landfall, with the remnant banding of the storm likely to reach Perth over the weekend or early next week. Rainfall is expected to be relatively light in those areas.
