I am in Kullu—the Kullu of Himachal Pradesh, the beautiful town that comes before Manali. If there’s any other Kullu, do let me know… but this is the one known for its authentic mountain flavors.

While exploring, my attention was caught by an old dhaba—around 83 years old. Its name is Janata Dhaba, located right on Kullu Mall Road, just next to the Dussehra Ground. I had to stop.

This dhaba is quite famous for its non-vegetarian food, although vegetarian options are also available. But what truly stands out here is their meat-rice—especially the Pota Rice and Mutton Rice.

What makes it special?

The food here is cooked in traditional brass utensils—so well-polished that they shine like gold from a distance. These utensils are not only old but authentic; many goldsmiths have even tried to buy them, but the owner has always refused.

Some dishes are prepared on gas, while many are slow-cooked over a wood fire. That’s what gives the food its deep, rich flavor and a distinct earthy aroma. The spices are not machine-ground; instead, they are crushed using a traditional wooden mortar and pestle. Whole spices are first pounded and then added to the dishes—this is where the real taste comes from.

The dhaba remains open all seven days of the week—no holidays. Around 35 kg of meat is prepared daily, which clearly reflects its popularity.

I tried the mutton rice here, and the taste was absolutely delightful. The Pota Rice, however, is the most in-demand dish—people enjoy it with great enthusiasm.

You can also find dishes like kadhi-chawal and rajma-chawal, but the real star is definitely the meat-rice.

Interestingly, not many tourists visit this place yet—perhaps because it’s still relatively unknown. However, it’s always crowded with locals. And yes, in 1970, the film Humsafar, starring Jeetendra, was also shot here.

I also spoke to a few people there—they said they’ve been eating here for years, and the taste is still just as amazing.

All in all, if you’re visiting Kullu and want to experience authentic, traditional mountain flavors, then Janata Dhaba is a must-try. It’s not just food—it’s a taste of heritage and tradition.
