To say Borussia Dortmund’s season isn’t going to plan would be a bit of an understatement at this point, and whilst there is still time to recover, they will need to do so soon to avoid their season turning into a disaster.
The weekend saw them lose 4-2 at Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga to make it two wins, two draws, and three defeats in their last seven competitive games. They are still only three points adrift of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, but that’s more down to their rivals’ inadequacies than Dortmund’s good performances.
Whilst they are still in the race for the Bundesliga, their chances in the Champions League are running out more rapidly. They sit 3rd in the group with just a single point to their name, and with just three games remaining they are six points behind Real Madrid and Tottenham in the qualification spots. This is thanks to their defeats away to Spurs and at home to Real Madrid, and the fact they couldn’t even manage to beat APOEL in Cyprus last month.
APOEL were always the underdogs in such a tough group, and while their chances of staying in Europe past December are incredibly slim, they have put in a good showing of themselves. They were comprehensively beaten 3-0 against Real Madrid and Spurs but didn’t humiliate themselves in either of those games, and their 1-1 draw at home to Dortmund was a fantastic display.
