World Cup 2018 qualifying ended in bitter disappointment for both Romania and Turkey, two sides who did make it to Euro 2016. Romania finished 4th in their group behind Poland, Denmark and Montenegro. That was also the final finishing position for Turkey who suffered a desperate 3-0 home defeat to Iceland in October to end their chances. Both sides will begin picking up the pieces here and goals at both ends look likely.
Turkey’s defensive issues were abundantly clear last month when they also drew 2-2 in Finland in their final qualifier. They are coached by a Romanian in the shape of Mircea Lucescu but the Turks have let in 1.75 goals per game during his short reign so far and Romania will feel they can pose problems.
The Turks do have some attacking talent and a few promising players coming through. The likes of Villarreal striker Enes Ünal, Roma midfielder Cengiz Ünder and Celta Vigo’s Emre Mor will form the core of the next generation, with all three just 20 years old. They have also scored twice or more in 5 of their last 9 games so there’s hope for the visitors here in front of goal.
