Both Qatar and Czech Republic were very disappointed not to have qualified for the World Cup in Russia, and it has lead to both nations taking drastic action regarding their latest squad selections. Both managers have left out a verity of key, experienced, and ageing players in favour of a younger squads. A Qatar FA official has stated that Felix Sanchez is looking to try out some younger players in a bid to produce a stronger squad for the next World Cup in 2022, which of course Qatar have already qualified for as hosts.
Karel Jarolím has also made some huge changes to the Czech Republic squad which now boasts just one player with over twenty caps for his country. The reasoning is not thought to be to build a younger squad, rather he has rested and/or dropped the majority of the squad that failed to achieve qualification for the World Cup and has called-up many fringe players and some young ones in order to test them to see if any are good enough or ready for first team duty, and given the 2-1 victory over Iceland on Wednesday night he looks to have made the right call.
These two countries have never faced one another on the football pitch before, but heading into Saturday’s game its the Europeans who have earned the title of form favourites after they picked up three wins, one draw, and two defeats from their last six matches. The Czechs have won each of their last three matches, and it was debut goals from Souček and Sýkora that saw the visitors defeat Iceland on Wednesday. The hosts have been a little more hit and miss than their guests, with Qatar winning three and losing three of their last six, with their last home game ending in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Curaçao.
