Neither of these countries came close to qualification for the World Cup in Russia, and now they need to work hard to find a winning formula over a selection of International friendlies to build up momentum ahead of the next set of qualifiers for Euro 2020. Estonia have the more experienced squad heading into Thursday’s game, with the hosts calling up nine players with under 10 caps to their name. Dundee midfielder Glen Kamara is the only uncapped player to be called up by the Fins, and he will be hoping to make his international debut against Estonia. The visitors have five players in their side with under 10 caps, but eleven of their squad have featured at least thirty times for their country.
The last time the nations locked horns was back in 2015, when once again it was Finland playing the role of hosts for another international friendly between the pair. A brace from Purje handed Estonia a 2-0 win on the day, but both sides used heavily rotated squads and made plenty of substitutions during the ninety minutes. Heading into this weeks game it’s the visitors Estonia who claim the title of form favourites after they picked up three wins, one draw, and two defeats from their last six in all competitions. Finland have only lost once during that period at home to Ukraine, and earned wins against Iceland and Kosovo, and draws with Croatia, Turkey and Liechtenstein.
We’re not expecting this game to produce too many goals as it usually ends with a maximum of two goals between the sides. Finland have seen four of their last six games in all competitions end with under 2.5 goals being scored, while Estonia have had three of their last six end the very same way. In four of their last six matches against each other under 2.5 goals have also been scored, and that’s why we’re confident that Thursday’s friendly will go a similar way.
