The Vulcan statue is the largest cast iron statue in the world. It reflects Birmingham's roots in the steel industry. The 56-foot (17 m) tall statue depicts the Roman god Vulcan, god of the fire and forge. The statue sits on top of a 126-foot tall pedestal build in 1936. It was created as Birmingham's entry for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904 World's Fair) in St. Louis.

The statue stands on the ridge of Red Mountain just 2-miles southeast of the heart of Downtown Birmingham.
