Belle Isle is a 982-acre island owned by the city of Detroit. It is home of the Belle Isle Aquarium (the nation's oldest), Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, James Scott Fountain (seen in this video), a US Coast Guard station, Dossin Great Lakes Museum and the Belle Isle Nature Center. The park was planned by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead of New York City's Central Park fame.
The island also features beaches, picnic facilities and canoe, kayak & paddleboat rentals. Belle Isle hosted the Detroit Grand Prix as part of the IndyCar series intermittently from 1992 until 2022. In 2023 the Grand Prix moved to the streets of Downtown Detroit.
Belle Isle see around 5 million visitors a year. The park is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) with assistance in resources and fundraising from the Belle Isle Conservancy.
