East Memphis and the Poplar Corridor are dominated by the two high-rises situated in the 5000 block of Poplar Avenue. One is the 274-foot-tall White Station Tower (1965) and the other the 365-foot-tall Clark Tower (1972).

While East Memphis began developing as an unincorporated, suburban community in the 1940s and 50s it was annexed by Memphis-proper in the mid-1960s. It has since grown into a region of the city with the highest concentration of affluent neighborhoods, upscale shopping and class-A office space.

The skyline of Downtown Memphis can be seen on the horizon, nine miles to the west.
