WinME On VirtualBox 7.0
Released in September 2000, the next major release of Windows, ME was released. Originally, Windows 98 was supposed to have been the last release of the Win9x-based OS's. However, their future home version of Windows based on the NT-kernel wasn't quite ready yet. As such, Windows ME would serve as a stopgap until the next generation Windows release was ready.
On the whole, Windows ME introduced a lot of new technologies. It was the first version of Windows to incorporate system restore. It had improved USB support. While the GUI largely remained the same, ME used the same desktop theme that was used in Windows 2000. The UI also included thumbnail support now, so one could view JPG images without having to open up a image editor. Also, it was the first version of Windows to include Windows Movie Maker, a program that introduced many to video editing for the very first time. Now granted, as a video editor, WMM was very barebones. However, for a free program, what would you expect. It was never meant to compete with Final Cut Pro.
Windows ME also included Windows Media Player 7, which has already been covered earlier on this channel. WMP7 was a very major revamp as it included a new UI, skins, support for CD-burning, music-ripping, and the ability to connect to Internet radio. It also had support for playlist. WMP7 was Microsoft's answer to WinAMP. WMP7 was backported and available to Win98 users as well.
Windows ME was not that well received due to its perceived instability issues. Now, I will be straight-forward. I have run across stability issues in ME. However, they were no greater than whatever issues that I've encountered on Win95 or 98. The fact is that if the hardware running ME is supported by the OS, it will run very well. The irony is that on my Ryzen setup, I've been unable to perform a Windows 98 install under a VirtualBox VM. However, I could set up WinME relatively quickly, and it runs well-enough.
The fact was that for the vast majority of Windows users, Win98 was simply good enough. While ME introduced many first, many of those tools were still in their infancy and would need improvement. WMM was greatly improved by the time of XP's launch, as was System Restore.
Windows ME runs generally well. However, there is performance lag when the Windows tooltip shows up sometimes. This is the case with Windows 98 as well. It has no trouble running on VirtualBox.
VirtualBox is emulating a multimedia gaming PC with a single core allocated to it. The host has a Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core CPU running at 4.2GHz. There is 512MB's of RAM allocated to the VM, along with a VESA 1.2 Compatible display adapter with 3D passthrough acceleration enabled via the SoftGPU drivers. An AMD PCnet NIC is installed, along with an AC'97 audio device, with an Intel 828011AA chipset, enabled. Windows is running at the screen resolution of 800 by 600, 32-bit color depth. Windows ME is installed.
