MP3 Playback On BeOS 5.0 Professional (86Box)
As being a multimedia-focused OS, BeOS would provide support for a lot of various audio and video formats, with MP3 being one of them. Even though we now take MP3 support for granted, this was not the case with operating systems from the late 90's/early 2000's. As a proprietary codec that had to be licensed, it was not often bundled with the OS's of their day, with the codec having to be installed manually afterwards. This was the case with Windows 98. The up-and-coming Linux operating system, built around the concept of open source, did not include support for MP3 as well. Including such support would violate the GPL along with whatever proprietary license agreement and technology of the MP3 codec.
Regardless, MP3 was taking the music scene by storm. The format had been around for a few years prior. However, the playback was always limited by the limited playback capabilities of processors like the 486 and Pentium 1 with especially high bitrates. However, with the arrival of later spec Intel Pentiums/AMD K6 for x86 and the PowerPC processors used in the Macintoshes, real-time decoding of the MP3 could start occurring. Many users the world over started to rip their favorite tracks off of CD into MP3's. Due to the MP3 file being much smaller compared to uncompressed PCM audio, this newcomer quickly became the standard for users who wanted to listen to music on their PC's. Audio playback on the PC was no longer a novelty, but the norm. The MP3 takeover transpired at the same time that the Internet really started to take off. Granted, dial-up speeds is nothing to brag about.
Thus, it made sense for BeOS 5.0 to include native MP3 support, so BeOS was ahead of the curve when realizing the popularity of that format.
