Feelin Retro: Half-Life Opposing Force On VMware Player 17 (Vid2)
It seems that U.S. Marine Adrian Shephard never gets a break, constantly dying Kenny style while trying to avoid a rapidly feeling pull of radioactive waste. (OMG Radioactive Waste Just Killed Kenny, You BASTARDS!)
It's time to feel in the shoes of Adrian Shephard, who has been given the task of containing the incident at Black Mesa while dealing with some random killer scientist named Gordon Freeman. Not surpassingly, a lot of wild crap happens as the aliens gained entrance to Earth via a portal that was opened by the resonance cascade by one unsuspecting scientist and are now reeking hell at Black Mesa.
Opposing Force, an expansion for Half-Life that was made by GearBox Software, puts you in the boots of a U.S. Marine instead of a crowbar welding scientist. I originally wanted to play this with SoftGPU on Windows 98. However, while Half-Life ran without issue, Opposing Force would constantly crash, and thus, I wasn't able to get anywhere. However, on VMware with Windows XP, the game ran without issue with all of its extraterrestrial mayhem.
VMware Player 17 is virtualizing a x86 multimedia PC with a single core processor (AMD Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core Host with Each Core running at 4.2GHz), 3GB of RAM, and a VESA Compatible display with 3D Acceleration Enabled. Windows is running at the screen resolution of 800 by 600, 32-bit color depth. The VM also has a HD audio device, and an AMD PCnet NIC. Windows XP SP3 is installed with the Plus!98 "Inside My Computer" theme that was copied over from a Windows 98 installation.
