With a partnership spanning more than 50 years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has continuously supported the United States (U.S.) and its people. This was demonstrated in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey left many citizens in the Houston, Texas, area in need.
To support the area’s recovery, the UAE pledged $10 million to the state’s relief efforts — $6.5 million of the gift was granted from the UAE Consul in Houston. Funds from this pledge contributed to improving issues surrounding homelessness relief, library services, public health expansion and community revitalization.
Following the initial pledge, officials from the UAE and Texas collaborated to understand the needs of the community and how to best support its recovery. Upon his visit to Houston to support the hurricane recovery efforts, Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba vocalized the UAE’s support for the people of Houston. “We are committed to helping Houston recover and rebuild after Hurricane Harvey,” stated the UAE Ambassador. “We want to support our friends in the ways they need it most, and today’s discussions will ensure we do just that.”
