Emirates Mars Mission Marks Milestone in UAE’s International Collaboration Efforts
The launch of the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) from the Tanegashima Space Station marked the UAE’s first interplanetary mission. Also known as “Hope,” or “Al Amal'' in Arabic, the goal of the mission is to collect data about the Martian atmosphere as part of a global effort to further humanity’s understanding of Mars’s climate. When the spacecraft launched in July 2020, Ambassador Al Otaiba praised the work of the EMM team and highlighted the extraordinary collaboration efforts between the UAE Space Agency and NASA.
Aside from being a notable mark in the UAE’s progress in space exploration, the EMM has also showcased the UAE’s commitment to international collaboration. Apart from the spacecraft's launch in Japan, Emirati and American scientists worked extensively to bring this project to fruition.
NASA Administrator, Jim Bridenstine commented on UAE-USA collaboration efforts stating, “This is a great moment not only for the [UAE] but for the [USA], and in fact, for all of the international partners that are involved in exploring space and sharing information. All of us can do more when we work together and the [UAE] is a shining example of what can be done when we do, in fact, work together.”
The UAE has also made considerable progress in space exploration beyond the EMM launch over the last few years. Another first for the Emirates' progress in space, UAE astronaut Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi joined the NASA Crew-6 to travel to the International Space Station, marking the Arab world’s first long-duration space mission and the UAE’s second mission to the ISS. Additionally, the Rashid Rover of the Emirates Lunar Mission is expected to land on the moon in April 2023.
