Highlighting the UAE’s Commitment to Improving Children’s Health Around the World
For over a decade, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has supported the work of Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. to advance pediatric health knowledge and research around the world. Children’s National has treated hundreds of young Emiratis over the years — spurring the UAE to gift the hospital $30 million toward the construction of the Children’s National Research and Innovation Campus.
Previously, the UAE also generously assisted Children’s National with creating the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. Since its founding in 2009, the Sheikh Zayed Institute has established Children’s National as an innovative leader in pediatric surgery whose mission is to discover solutions that are pain-free, less invasive and more effective.
Yousef Al Otaiba carries a deep understanding of the importance of accessible and effective children’s medical care, as his own daughter experienced a life-threatening medical emergency as an infant. Following his daughter’s treatment at Children’s National — which led to a full recovery — Al Otaiba has worked to give back to the hospital for the support it lent during a difficult time. He and his wife Abeer went on to co-chair Children’s National Medical Center’s annual ball with Bret and Amy Baier, raising $10.9 million. These efforts led to the Al Otaibas receiving the Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Prize in Philanthropy.
