Yousef Al Otaiba and Renowned Entertainer Steve Harvey Receive a Call from Space
United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi and NASA astronaut Warren ‘Woody’ Hoburg video chatted with Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba and entertainer Steve Harvey during an event celebrating the UAE’s progress in space. Calling from the International Space Station (ISS), the astronauts discussed their experience to date — working, living and collaborating in space. Ambassador Al Otaiba praised both Al Neyadi and Hoburg for their efforts at the ISS.
The celebration, which was held at George Washington University, also featured discussion from American and Emirati leaders in space. Guest speakers included Hazzaa AlMansoori, the UAE’s first astronaut; Salem AlMarri, Director General of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC); and Karen Feldstein, NASA Associate Administrator for International and Interagency Relations. Moderating the discussion, Steve Harvey remarked on the accomplishments made by the UAE’s space program since its establishment ten years ago.
In just a decade, the UAE has made significant strides in space exploration and furthered collaborations with international partners, including the United States (U.S.). From the country’s first astronauts venturing to space, to the Emirati’s Mars Mission, the UAE is blazing new paths where Emiratis have not gone before. When asked about the driver behind the UAE’s success in space, AlMarri said: “There’s determination from leadership and the people to achieve big objectives…on a country scale. So when you translate that down to a space program scale that’s exactly the same approach we’ve taken…We do this collaborating internationally.”
