Yousef Al Otaiba on Advancing Youth STEM Through FIRST Robotics
Every year, the annual FIRST Global Challenge allows students from around the world to participate in the organization’s annual robotics competition. During the event, participants have the opportunity to hone their skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields while engaging with students from other cultures. Together, teams must overcome cultural and language barriers to persevere through the challenge set forth.
In 2019, the event was held in Dubai. Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba encouraged students to overcome negativity and pursue their future goals, saying, “Anytime they hear someone telling them ‘this is impossible’ or ‘this can’t be done,’ don’t listen. Look to the future and don’t let anything stand in your way.”
With a mission to empower future leaders in the UAE, the UAE USA United campaign has invested in programs and initiatives to help expand the role of youth in everyday society. In regards to STEM education, the UAE has instituted education reforms to prioritize STEM curriculums as well as Research & Development. Additionally, many young Emirati women have taken great strides in the STEM field, with some going on to study at prestigious universities, work for the UAE Space Agency and NASA, or make history in their fields.
