An arterial gas embolism is a rare and potentially fatal condition in which gas bubbles become lodged in the arterial circulation blocking oxygenated blood flow and thus resulting in ischemia of various tissues and organs. Arterial gas emboli can be caused by pulmonary over-inflation syndrome, venous gas emboli and as a complication of medical or surgical interventions. Signs and symptoms vary depending on the site of gas bubble embolization, the brain and heart being the most common. Diagnosis is heavily dependent on a history and physical exam and various other tests are completed to either prove or disprove the diagnosis. Treatment of an arterial gas embolism is aimed at stopping the cause, supportive care of affected organ systems and recompression therapy. Prevention focuses on preventing pulmonary over-inflation syndrome and venous gas emboli and taking special care to avoid air entry during medical or surgical interventions.
