In this video, I will teach you about Beta-2 Agonist pharmacology, including their mechanism of action, types, indications, adverse effects, contraindications and special considerations.
Beta-2 agonists stimulate beta-2 receptors in the bronchioles and uterus, causing bronchodilation and uterine muscle relaxation. The most common types are albuterol, terbutaline, salmeterol and formoterol. They are most commonly used to treat bronchospasms and reactive airway diseases but can also inhibit preterm labour and treat hyperkalemia. Adverse effects include hypokalemia, tremors, nervousness, chest pain or discomfort, hyperglycemia, and tachycardia. Long-acting beta-2 agonists should not be used as the sole treatment for asthma as it can increase the risk of asthma-related death. Administer short-acting inhalers before long-acting. Complete respiratory assessment, blood pressure, pulse, and, in some cases, pulmonary function tests before and after administration to assess response.
