In this video, I will teach you about Beta-3 Agonist pharmacology, including their mechanism of action, types, indications, adverse effects, contraindications, special considerations and drug-to-drug interactions.
Beta-3 agonists bind to beta-3 receptors located in the detrusor muscle, causing relaxation. The most common types are mirabegron and vibegron, which both end in "-begron." They are used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder, such as urinary frequency, urgency, incontinence, and nocturia. Adverse effects are usually mild and may include urinary retention and urinary tract infections, and mirabegron can also cause tachycardia and hypertension. Avoid with end-stage renal disease and severe hepatic impairment. Also, avoid mirabegron with severe uncontrolled hypertension. When using beta-3 agonists, assess voiding patterns, fluid intake and output, urinary retention, and post-residual voids. Also, when using mirabegron, blood pressure and pulse should additionally be assessed.
