Non-selective beta-agonists stimulate beta-1 receptors located in the heart and beta-2 receptors located in the lungs and blood vessels. This causes an increase in heart rate, the force at which the heart contracts, bronchodilation, and vasodilation. The most common is isoproterenol. Bradycardia is the most common indication treated with a continuous intravenous infusion. They are also utilized, although less frequently, for asthma and COPD. The most common adverse effects are tachydysrhythmias, nervousness, and chest pain. They should not be used with tachydysrhythmias and hypotension. Continuous hemodynamic monitoring is required when used for bradycardia, and a complete respiratory assessment is necessary when used for asthma and COPD.
