Howto : Video Conversion to MSVID1 AVI
Now, in theory, this should have been straightforward. MSVid1 is natively included in Win11 as well. I should have been able to repeat the Cinepak AVI steps with MSVid1 as well. However, the encoded video had very massive playback issues on Windows 3.1. The video had all that weird green distortion artifacts.
Now, on the host end, the conversion is still the same. I:
1. Rendered my MP4 video in Kdenlive.
2. Use FFMPEG GUI to convert the video into a x264 AVI that can be opened in VirtualDub once the x264 VFW codec is installed
3. Use VirtualDub to convert the MP4 AVI into a Cinepak AVI
The reason why I opted to convert the video into a Cinepak is so that it can be opened on the VidEdit program on the Windows NT 4.0 guest that will perform the video conversion. I have a WinNT 4.0 guest VM running on VMware Workstation that I installed the VFW SDK onto. The VFW SDK includes the VidEdit program that will be used for the conversion. I downloaded a NT 4.0 VM from WinWorld as that one is readfy to go and already has the VMware Additions installed with the shared folder feature enabled.
From there, the Cinepak AVI was copied onto the VM, and VidEdit was used to convert that video from Cinepak to MSVid1. The new MSVid1 AVI was copied off the NT 4.0 VM onto the host, where from the host, it was copied onto the Windows 3.1 vhd image which already has the VFW runtimes installed. After that, it's showtime!
