In true episode 9 style, Game of Thrones threw a big shock to us in the way of Stannis sacrificing Shireen. This scene was quite chilling, pun intended, and I thought the acting by Kerry Ingram was really good. So let's take a closer look at what happened and discuss where it could go from here.
Ever since we met Melissandre, she has been preaching to Stannis about who he is and what he needs to become to potentially save mankind from the Whitewalkers. She also talks often about the power of her god and king's blood.
For Stannis, he firmly believes the words of the Red Woman and has experienced and witnessed her magic. He tasked her with killing Renley, in which Davos reported to him partly of what he had seen, he was shown a vision in the flames when his faith seemed to dwindle and he believes that when Melissandre drew blood from Gendry it lead to the deaths of Robb Stark and Joffrey Baratheon, with Balon's doom still pending. Now, in this episode, I imagined it took all of Stannis' faith to allow the sacrifice of his only daughter in pursuit of the man he is to become, and so we saw poor Shireen burnt at the stake.
So how will this new sacrifice lead them to victory in the future? And how will it work?
To me it feels like Melissandre, although knowledgeable in her magic, doesn't fully understand how it works. Most of her spells and techniques are a cross between blood and fire magic, they are one time use, which she has previously stated, and I suspect that this time it will be nothing like the other spells.
To me this could go two ways, we might see an immediate reaction from this sacrifice and Stannis might be greeted with a vision, or perhaps and opportunity will arise shortly that will allow his army to gain a significant advantage of the enemy ahead.
Or the second being that there won't be an exact effect from Shireen's death at all, like fire shooting from Stannis' eyes burning enemies in Winterfell, rather that this is just like all other sacrifices, something given up in hope that the receiving God will favour them in the future and that Stannis will be initially disappointed when nothing has immediately changed and he will again have to rely on his faith to push forward.
Hopefully all of these questions will be answered in the finale coming next week. So let me know what you guys think, will Stannis' sacrifice give him what he desires? Or has he killed his only daughter based on a conjurer and demented visions? Leave a comment below with your thoughts, as always thanks for watching Quiklore.
