Imagine a marathoner just completed a grueling 26.2 mile run, and a powerlifter, just threw 200 kg’s over his head in a snatch. Both of these athletes are using energy.

But how does energy consumption of an endurance exercise and a high intensity exercise differ?

Adenosine Triphosphate.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the primary source of immediate energy for cellular metabolism stored in chemical bonds (energy source used to drive muscle contraction).

Remember that powerlifter we mentioned earlier? Or that marathoner? They are both using ATP.

However, the body produces ATP at different rates, depending on exercise.

Check out this great analogy to remember ATP and its role in energy metabolism in the body.
