In this video, I will teach you the pathophysiology, causes, diagnosis, signs and symptoms, treatment, and prevention of pulmonary hypertension.
Pulmonary hypertension is characterized by abnormally high blood pressure in the pulmonary circulation, which can lead to right-sided heart failure. It is most commonly caused by a disruption in the homeostasis of vasoactive hormones, often of unknown origin. Other causes include left-sided heart failure, pulmonary emboli, thoracic tumors and pulmonary diseases. Shortness of breath during exertion is typically the first symptom, followed by fainting, lightheadedness, chest pain, and symptoms of right-sided heart failure. Diagnosis involves several tests to diagnose and identify the underlying cause. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause. If the cause is idiopathic, pulmonary artery vasodilating agents are used. A heart-lung transplant is considered as a last resort. Prevention is often not possible and depends on the underlying cause. Following recommended treatments can help slow disease progression.
