Pondering some mima mounds in northern Oregon - After the Ants
Join me after the ants have gone underground for winter, to take a look at some of the mysterious "mima mounds" in north-central Oregon in October 2022.
These mysterious mounds of rock and earth have defied explanation. Some theories exist as to their creation, but no one has seen them built or made so we can only speculate. Termite or insect mounds are far different, and the large stones on the surface of mima mounds could not have been moved by bugs.
Similarly these are not made by burrowing critters, as, again, the sometimes 20-pound stones on their surface could not have been moved by any rodent.
The prevailing theory is that they are made by water; the Columbia River, millions of years ago, washed across this landscape, miles south of its current channel. Could a large continental river have laid down such a widespread landscape of these mounds, or is there yet another explanation?
