Awkward isn’t the word I would use for dinner with Joe’s family. They tried to involve me in all of their conversations but I just couldn’t. I don’t know why I trusted Joe telling him about Jack, I couldn’t trust him because he’s just another man, he will do exactly the same to me as Jack does. I have to get out of here. I have to go back.
“I just need some air. Please excuse me” I smile a little and make my way out of the front door
“Demi” Joe says behind me “Im only trying to help you”
“But you cant Joe. That’s the difference, your trying but you cant because you will never understand what he puts me through”
“You wont let me understand”
“Because you will never be able to understand!” I shout tears threatening to fall “God Joe this isn’t fair, your just the same as him”
“I will never be as bad as your boyfriend Demi and that is something that you need to understand because not every single guy will abuse you”
“That’s the thing though isn’t it? I will never know that”
“You could if you just trusted me”
“How can I? How can you expect me to just trust you when I don’t even know you?”
“You wont even give me the chance to get close to you so we can get to know each other”
“Because your just like him! You will never understand the pain that you guys put us through when you hurt us physically and emotionally”
“Im not like him!”
“Prove it!”
“I will if you just let me. I cant let you go back to him Demi. If I was anything like him I wouldn’t have cared to try and help you. Please let me prove it to you”
“Okay”
“I know my parents place wasn’t the best idea” Joe says as he parks the car. He’s brought us to a beach. Im not sure where it is exactly and he wont tell me but its secluded “I brought this beach house when I made my first million”
“Your first million? You’re a billionaire”
“Exactly, so now you know how long ive had this place and ive only ever used it once”
“Why? I don’t get it”
“Ive never had a reason to come back here”
“And now you do?” I ask
“Now I do” He nods “You are that reason Demi. I need to keep you safe”
“You know you cant do that” I point out “You cant keep me here forever. We both have jobs Joe, we cant just drop everything just so you can keep me safe”
“I need the time to figure out what he wants. I’ll pay any price to keep you safe”
“We can end this right now if you just take me home. I can find out what he wants”
“Phone him. Im not taking you back until I know your safe. Even then I don’t know if I can trust you’ll be safe”
