Feb 12, 2013 South Africa_Moscow condemns N. Korea nuclear test -- Lavrov
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday visited Johannesburg, South Africa, where he met with South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.
At a press conference after the talks, Sergey Lavrov said Russia hopes Pyongyang's nuclear tests will not be used as a pretext for building up military activity in the region. He also said Pyongyang's current steps deserve denunciation.
"I can say that Pyongyang's new nuclear test reported today must be condemned... It's obvious that the UN Security Council resolutions on the DPRK should be implemented and Pyongyang must totally give up its nuclear-missile programs, return to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the regime of fully-embracing IAEA guarantees."
Lavrov regretted that despite good neighborly relations with North Korea, Pyongyang ignored
Moscow's warnings that a nuclear test should not be carried out.
"We have long and seriously been proposing to start working out a peacekeeping system in Northeast Asia that would provide security to all the states in the region and be based on the existing obligations on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. We'll continue our efforts with all the participants of the six-party talks and deem it crucial to get them resumed soon."
