Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday held a meeting with high-ranking Foreign Ministry officials to mark their professional holiday - Day of Diplomatic Service, which was
celebrated in Russia on Sunday.
Speaking at the meeting, the president said Russia must promote a positive image of itself abroad.
"It's obvious that 'classical' diplomacy has changed a lot, or its times are gone forever. You and your colleagues have to deal with the economy, developing business ties, various economic projects and opening new promising markets."
He added that "proper application of soft power mechanisms is gaining priority -- it's about strengthening the position of the Russian language, active promotion of Russia's reputation abroad and the ability to become an integral part of the global information flow."
During the meeting the president also awarded state orders to the ministry's workers.
