In this textile artist interview, L’Merchie Frazier discusses how her quilts explore themes of Black identity across the Americas and beyond. Through fabric, stitch and layered symbolism, her work highlights stories that have often gone unwritten, unrecognised and unacknowledged.
Black and Indigenous communities share more than 500 years of intertwined history shaped by displacement, resistance and cultural survival. L’Merchie’s quilts select powerful moments from that history, confronting the lasting impact of slavery, systemic racism and the dehumanising legacy of people being treated as property.
Her textile practice combines art, activism and education, using quilting as a way to reclaim narratives, honour lived experience and spark dialogue about history and social justice.
