Discover the striking photo-based quilts of textile artist Sidnee Snell in this inspiring textile artist interview filmed at the Festival of Quilts 2024.
Portland, Oregon–based textile artist and former engineer Sidnee Snell shares her exhibition Temporary Obsessions and the stories behind her work. Her quilts develop “like a Polaroid photograph,” using a technique she engineered that combines raw-edged foundational appliqué to place colour, quilting stitches to sketch out forms, and a final washing that softens the edges between images.
This process creates a richly textured surface where stitch and fabric blur and abstract her digitally manipulated photographic imagery. The tactile quality is central to Sidnee’s work—she aims to draw viewers closer, tempting them to touch the quilted surface despite the usual gallery warnings.
