In this textile artist interview, Ekta Kaul shares how her distinctive embroidered maps combine traditional Kantha stitching with contemporary textile storytelling. Her work reflects themes of identity, belonging and place, often mapping landscapes through layers of stitch.
Ekta grew up in India surrounded by beautiful textiles. Her mother was a prolific needlewoman and her grandmother a quilter, both of whom inspired her lifelong love of cloth and embroidery. After moving to the United Kingdom, stitch became a way for Ekta to reconnect with memories of home and maintain a connection with the women in her family.
Her embroidered maps have become internationally recognised for their delicate hand stitching and thoughtful exploration of cultural identity and personal geography.
