In this textile artist interview, Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn share insights into their exhibition Rhythms & Reflections. The artists have worked together for more than 45 years and are internationally respected for their innovative approach to hand and machine embroidery.
Jan Beaney’s work is inspired by the ever-changing wetlands of Lefkada, where organic growth patterns, shifting light and lush grasses create richly layered surfaces and textures. Observations of the tidal waterways and atmospheric evening light have led to the development of new focal points within her textile pieces.
Jean Littlejohn’s work focuses on the rhythms and cycles of the moon. Drawing inspiration from cultural myths and legends, her textiles explore humanity’s long-standing fascination with lunar phases. During lockdown, the continuity of the moon’s cycles offered reassurance in uncertain times and became a central theme in her work. Pieces such as Wolf Moon and Sturgeon Moon reflect this influence, alongside works inspired by atmospheric night skies and cloud-framed moons.
