Discover how award-winning textile artist Holly Searle, also known as The Subversive Stitcher, uses embroidery to challenge social issues and give voice to powerful stitched messages.
In this textile artist interview, Holly Searle shares the inspiration behind her striking artworks that combine hand-cut felt lettering, vintage tea towels and carefully chosen words. By transforming familiar domestic textiles into bold statements, her work reimagines embroidery as a platform for contemporary commentary and social reflection.
In 2020 Holly launched her Subverted Vintage Tea Towel Series, and has since hand-stitched more than 160 pieces. Her passion for embroidery was sparked after seeing a sampler stitched by Mary Frances Heaton, who used needle and thread to petition Queen Victoria about injustice. Inspired by this powerful act of stitched protest, Holly began creating work that highlights social issues and empowers women.
Her textiles have been featured in solo and group exhibitions, continuing a long tradition of using stitch as a powerful tool for expression and advocacy.
