Discover the powerful feminist embroidery of Domestic Duster Project, where women around the world use stitch to share their voices and experiences.
In this textile artist interview, project founder Vanessa Marr discusses the award-winning Domestic Duster Project, established in 2014. The project uses the everyday household cleaning cloth—the yellow duster—as a canvas for women to embroider their domestic experiences, frustrations and celebrations through stitched words and imagery.
By transforming an object associated with traditional “women’s work,” the project challenges domestic stereotypes while creating a powerful collective artwork. Each embroidered duster becomes a personal statement, giving voice to women who may otherwise feel unheard or overlooked.
This exhibition features a selection of dusters stitched by women from across the world, highlighting the diverse stories, humour, protest and creativity expressed through embroidery.
The project is ongoing, and anyone—of any skill level and from anywhere in the world—is invited to take part.
