Greece has seen its first large-scale protest against a new round of wage and pension cuts, with thousands marching through the streets of the country's second-biggest city of Thessaloniki on Saturday.

Minor scuffles with riot police erupted at the end of what was otherwise a peaceful demonstration, as several young people set garbage on fire and burned an EU flag.

The protest comes against the backdrop of EU and IMF inspectors visiting Greece to assess whether the debt-crippled nation qualifies for its next multibillion euro tranche of aid.

To secure that rescue loan and stay in the eurozone, Athens is planning spending cuts of almost 12 billion euros.
