President Dmitry Medvedev paid a visit to an apatite mine in Russia's Arctic on Friday.
The Vostochny Mine in the Murmansk region is owned by the world's largest apatite producer, Apatit.
Medvedev was shown the main control room, and later held a meeting with mine workers, attended by the region's acting governor, Marina Kovtun.
The president highlighted the energy supply problems facing the Murmansk Region, and said Russia's far north needs to move away from fossil fuels and increase energy efficiency.
The Vostochny mine is situated in the southeast of the Khibiny mountain range.
The Apatit company accounts for over 70% of Russian production of apatite concentrate, used in fertilizers.
