“Resistance to the organized mass can be effected only by the man who is as well organized in his individuality as the mass itself.”
~ Carl Jung
Most people who read this will be familiar with the concept of “Waḥdat al-Wujud”, the Unity of Being, but this is only half of the equation. There is also “Fardiat al-Wujud,” the Individuality of Being. These are not two separate things, but rather two poles of one field: the field of Being.
We would suggest that this is why Mr. Gurdjieff put his emphasis on the process of creating a single, enduring “I” that is not subject to the effects of many mechanical false “I”s — or in other words, a permanent, objective “I” that will allow you access to the whole field of Being. We would say that without the individual, the universal is not readily attainable. Furthermore, when a person touches the universal without a stable, objective “I”, such an experience can lead to pathology. Conversely, when one has established a permanent “I” but lacks access to the universal, one is at risk for developing sociopathic tendencies. Yet, to have a connection to only half the field of Being is very common.
How can we develop a healthy objective “I”? How do we know if and when we have one? Let’s take an hour or so to talk about Fardiat al Wujud and uncover some answers.
