I heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased The Lord…
~ Leonard Cohen
Since the beginning of modern human consciousness, mystics have understood that there is a direct relationship between sound, music, and the Divine. We see it in yogic thought, for example, which centers concepts such as spanda, pranava, and shabd. Each of these very ancient terms points to the idea of sacred sound.
So too, we see that Sufis throughout the centuries as well as Mr. Gurdjieff in more recent times have used music extensively in their work. There is a living corpus of sacred music that continues to feature in Sufi practices from Morocco to Samarkand. Mr. Gurdjieff in turn composed very specific music to go with his practices that we still have with us today.
What’s behind this perceived tie between music and the Divine? It seems that music, with or without lyrics, affects different parts of the brain compared to mere prose. As we’ll discuss, those effects can be extremely important for someone on the path of the Work.
Let’s take a little time this morning to explore how and why we might experience these effects for ourselves.
